The UAW’s administrative caucus has nominated current secretary-treasurer Dennis Williams to succeed Bob King as the next president of the auto maker’s union. The person nominated by the caucus has traditionally won election to the post. Reuters’ report on the nomination can be found here .
The Detroit News points out that Williams “has never built a car” and will become the first President of the UAW that did not formerly work in an auto plant. The article notes that the UAW “boasted more than 1.5 million dues-paying members in 1979 now has just 382,513 — and only about 40 percent of those work in the auto industry. The rest include nurses, casino workers and graduate students. They make a lot less than the men and women who toil in the nation’s automobile factories, and they pay a lot less in union dues.” The full article can be found here .Subscribe
