CHICAGO – Clifford Shapiro and Greg Gistenson of Barnes & Thornburg’s Construction Law Practice Group attended the historic commissioning of new Runway 10C-28C at O’Hare International Airport on Oct. 17, 2013. This new major runway was completed as part of the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP) and is the final component of OMP Phase One.
The OMP is the largest airport construction project in the U.S. The $8 billion program is transforming O’Hare’s airfield into a modern, parallel runway configuration with eight runways: six east-west parallel runways and two crosswind runways. In addition to Runway 10C-28C, the other completed OMP projects to date include Runway 9L-27R, the North Air Traffic Control Tower and a 3,000 foot extension to O’Hare’s busiest runway, Runway 10L-28R.
Barnes & Thornburg’s Construction Law Practice Group was invited to attend the ceremonies because the firm represented the city during Phase One in connection with various claims that arose during the construction process, and worked with the city to engage in a creative mediation process that resolved the claims and avoided potentially disruptive litigation.
The event was held on a taxiway adjacent to the new runway with views of jets taking off and landing nearby. Speakers included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, Senator Dick Durbin and Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino.
