The Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation held its third annual fundraising campaign from May 22-26. The campaign, titled the Spirit of Giving Week, featured an internal weeklong agenda of events and themed spirit days and raised over $300,000. The campaign encourages attorneys and teammates across all the firm’s offices to donate to the foundation, whose mission is promoting, advocating, and effecting racial and social justice in local communities and nationally.
The foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) organization, is funded by Barnes & Thornburg attorneys and employees; 100 percent of donated funds are used to award grants to selected nonprofits in the communities in which we have offices.
With the 2023 Spirit of Giving Week, the foundation has raised more than $1 million. The Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation has awarded $800,000 in grants to 16 different nonprofits since its inception in 2020.
Among other advocacy areas, these grants have supported efforts related to homelessness, hunger, incarceration, and diversity in the legal profession – in 16 firm markets cities ranging from Chicago to New York and Los Angeles.
“Many in our communities come from worlds in desperate need of change,” said Roscoe Howard, Washington, D.C. office managing partner and foundation board member. “The foundation allows each of us at Barnes & Thornburg to identify those worlds and contribute to their change.”
The 2023 grantees will be announced at the end of this year. For more information, visit the Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation website.
