Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation Awards $50,000 Grant to La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center

LOS ANGELES – The Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center in San Gabriel, California. La Casa is a nonprofit organization working to enhance the well-being of the culturally diverse children and families it serves by providing educational and social services that promote self-sufficiency and motivation for lifelong learning.

“We are committed to helping community members overcome the barriers of limited education, underemployment, poverty, language, inadequate housing and lack of medical care,” said Julietta Perez, executive director of La Casa. “We are grateful to Barnes & Thornburg and the Racial and Social Justice Foundation for supporting our mission as we continue to address the educational and social needs of the children and families we serve.”

La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center was founded in 1946 by Reverend César Lizárraga and his wife Angelita after realizing their community lacked programs to address the educational and social needs of its economically disadvantaged residents.

“Simply put, the education and social services that La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center provides is changing lives,” said Kevin Rising, managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office. “We are delighted to contribute to such an important cause.”

The Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 2020 with financial support coming entirely through personal donations from the attorneys and business professionals in each of the firm’s offices. The foundation is committed to promoting, advocating and effecting racial and social justice in local communities and nationally. To date, it has granted more than $1.1 million to organizations in communities where Barnes & Thornburg has offices.

“I am proud to be part of a firm that supports, advocates for and advances the work of organizations such as La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center,” said Connie Lahn, president of the foundation and managing partner of the firm’s Minneapolis office. “We are honored to partner with an organization that continues to effect change by welcoming, nurturing and enriching its community members in need.”

With more than 800 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes & Thornburg is one of the largest law firms in the country. The firm serves clients worldwide from offices in Atlanta, Boston, California, Chicago, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Philadelphia, Raleigh, Salt Lake City, South Florida, Texas and Washington, D.C.
